What happens after a divorce is finalized?

Even if you were to see a divorce process through the courts in California, there could still be work left to do. Initially, you would have to adapt to the new circumstances, deal with common liabilities and potentially review your estate. You might not find it easy to face even more paperwork after all of the forms you worked through with your legal proceedings, but the unfortunate fact is that there is often still more to do after you receive a decision.

First, modifying your routine has the potential to be the hardest step you must take post-divorce. There are many things that could disrupt your normal behavior, such as a visitation schedule, support agreements or the absence of a partner. Even if the changes are positive, they could be disruptive. If you find yourself struggling too much with this aspect, then there might be a way for you to modify the terms of your divorce.

Second comes removing your former partner’s name from your old community property. The Judicial Council of California suggests that you cancel shared credit cards and transfer auto titles if necessary after a divorce. These financial accounts and property documents could be a source of unwanted liability for you in the future. Your ex-spouse could run up a bill in your name or have problems with your car, for example.

Finally, although it might not seem urgent, you would probably want to review your insurance policies and your will as soon as possible. If you wish to change a beneficiary, for example, doing so while you already have all the relevant information at hand could speed up the process. Please view this article as information only.
